Pebbledash Painting in Bradford

Pebbledash painting on 1930s semidetached houses in Bradford by Bradford Decorators

Bradford Decorators paint pebbledash properties across Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Bradford has more pebbledash than almost any comparable city in the north. If your semi has that rough stone-chip finish on the upper storey or top to bottom and it’s looking tired, stained, or faded, we can transform it.

What we cover:

  • Full-house pebbledash painting — top to bottom
  • Upper-storey pebbledash on two-tone semis
  • Biological growth treatment before painting
  • Minor pebble repairs and pointing ahead of coating
  • Colour changes — fresh white, soft grey, or any masonry colour

Pebbledash Painting Services

Pebbledash requires specialist techniques that differ from smooth render or standard masonry.

How Pebbledash is Painted

Pebbledash is a rough exterior finish where small stones and gravel are embedded into a render coat. A standard roller cannot reach into the crevices between the pebbles.

A long-pile masonry roller worked in with a brush is used to ensure paint fills every gap. Pebbledash also consumes significantly more paint per square metre — a fact that catches out many DIY attempts and leads to patchy, uneven coverage.

Professional application means two full coats, properly worked in, with consistent coverage across the whole elevation. The result holds for years rather than failing within a season.

Preparation: Washing and Treating the Surface

Bradford’s climate — cool, damp, and with significant rainfall — encourages moss, algae, and lichen to establish in the crevices of a pebbledash surface. Painting directly over biological growth traps moisture and causes the new coat to fail.

The surface is pressure washed thoroughly before any paint is applied. Where moss or algae is present — common on north-facing elevations in Eccleshill, Idle, and Wibsey — a mould treatment is applied. Only once the surface is clean and treated does painting begin.

Any pebbles that have become loose or detached are re-fixed or filled before coating. Painting over gaps in the pebble surface produces a visually poor result that no amount of extra coats will fix.

Colour Changes

Changing the colour of a pebbledash house is one of the most dramatic exterior transformations available. A property in Idle or Eccleshill that has been a tired sand or dirty magnolia for decades can become a crisp light grey, a deep slate, or a warm off-white.

Bradford Decorators supply trade-quality breathable masonry paint in a wide range of colours. If you have a RAL or BS colour code, or want to match a specific shade, we can source it. We also advise on colours that work alongside the stone-effect pebble finish and the surrounding brickwork.

Partial Pebbledash — Upper Storey and Bands

Many Bradford semis have pebbledash only on the upper storey, with plain render or facing brick below. This two-tone configuration is very common in Shipley, Heaton, and Clayton. It requires careful masking at the join line to produce a clean edge rather than a blurred transition.

The join between the pebbled upper storey and the lower elevation is worked carefully, masking the boundary and finishing it sharply. Two-storey work requires scaffold tower access to the upper sections. We also coordinate with exterior painting projects where both upper pebble and lower render need repainting.

Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting

Areas where pebbles have detached — typically at corners, around window reveals, and at ground level — need attention before any coating is applied. Painting over bare patches produces an uneven result and leaves exposed render vulnerable to water ingress.

In older properties around Wibsey and Frizinghall, detached patches at ground level corners are commonly found and around bay window reveals. We inspect the surface before quoting and include minor repairs as part of the job. More significant areas of detached pebbledash are assessed and quoted separately where required.

Here’s How It Works

1. Surface Assessment

Pebbledash is inspected, any biological growth, detached sections, or pointing concerns noted, and access requirements confirmed before quoting.

2. Pressure Washing

The full surface is thoroughly washed. Biological growth is treated where present and allowed to die back before washing off.

3. Repairs

Detached pebbles are re-fixed or filled. Any obvious pointing gaps are addressed.

4. Masking

Windows, doors, sills, and surrounding brickwork are fully masked before any paint is applied.

5. First Coat

Long-pile masonry roller and brush, working paint into the pebble crevices across the full surface.

6. Second Coat

Applied once the first coat is fully dry. Full coverage confirmed before masking is removed.

Pebbledash Painting Costs in Bradford

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01274 003166 for a precise quote.

Typical Price Ranges

Typical range: £550 to £2,200 depending on coverage and condition.

3-bed terrace, pebbledash upper half only (Eccleshill, Idle, Wibsey): £550–£900. 3-bed semi, pebbledash throughout: £800–£1,500. 4-bed detached, fully pebbledashed: £1,200–£2,200. Scaffold tower hire if required: £200–£400 additional.

What Affects the Cost

Surface coverage — upper storey only versus full house is the largest single variable. Surface condition — heavy biological growth or extensive detachment adds significantly to preparation time. Number of storeys and access also affects the final price.
